The Merlot grape vine is less vigorous than Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc, so Merlot can be grown on richer soils. The Merlot grape vine buds or flowers faster than most other grape vine species. As a result, the grapes can be harvested sooner. Merlot wine holds specific characteristics that resemble those of the Cabernet Sauvignon wine. Though Merlot is highly adaptable thanks to its tolerance against soil conditions, it is not generally suitable for long ageing.
